The President's Society
On Wednesday morning, July 15th, 2009, Christian leaders from across the spectrum of the Wesleyan theological world gathered in the sanctuary of Wesley Biblical Seminary on Northside Drive in Jackson, MS to celebrate the resurrection of Dr. Eldon Fuhrman. Dr. Fuhrman was the second president and one of the founding fathers of Wesley Biblical Seminary, and a pivotal leader in the 20th century Wesleyan movement. He passed away in the early hours of Saturday, July the 11th, at the age of 91.
Dr. Fuhrman was once asked the question why he helped found Wesley Biblical Seminary. Dr. Fuhrman responded:
Wesley Biblical Seminary! Why was it founded thirty years ago and why is it continuing today? The answer can be stated in a very few words: Wesley Biblical Seminary was founded to meet a very critical need in Christian theological education!
When Dr. Howard and I, along with some other esteemed faculty members, agreed on this purpose we knew we would need to emphasize: (1) the need for an infallible Bible, and therefore, inerrant in the autographs; (2) an undisparaged Christ as Savior and Lord; (3) a full and free salvation; and (4) to obey Christ's great commandment to carry the gospel to the entire world.
That need, and our response to it, still stands today and we put heart, mind and soul into meeting it gladly.
It is my distinct privilege to offer you the opportunity to make a memorial gift in Dr. Fuhrman's memory in order to help with these needs for which he gave a substantial part of his life. The President's Society will be founded in his memory with the gifts you send. The society will exist for this great end of perpetuating the kind of theological education Dr. Fuhrman and his esteemed colleagues lived and died for. In thirty-four short years, it has produced Christian leaders all over the globe in at least fifty countries on six continents!
Their vision was propelled by God, and it is being carefully promoted and continued today. Please join my family in helping to establish The President's Society at Wesley Biblical Seminary because the cause is Christ's and the need is great. I know you will find joy in helping to further establish his godly work. We thank God for Dr. Eldon Fuhrman's ongoing witness. Through the lives of his students and friends, his witness forever remains to the glory of God!
