Biography
A graduate of Harvard University's Near Eastern Language and Civilizations department, Dr. Richter is particularly interested in the interface between archaeology, anthropology and biblical studies. At Wesley one of her particular contributions is the creation of an Israel Studies program specializing in the historical geography and archaeology of Israel. She is the seminary's Jerusalem University College representative and has established an ongoing relationship between the seminary and Amihai Mazar's excavation in Tel Rehov, Israel.
Prior to coming to Wesley Biblical, Professor Richter taught for nine years at Asbury Theological Seminary, as an adjunct professor at Gordon College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, as an instructor at Harvard Divinity School, and as a teaching fellow at Harvard University. She also served for ten years in pastoral ministry. Her academic accomplishments include a number of teaching awards and scholarships, academic papers and articles, including The Deuteronomistic History and the Name Theology: lĕšakkēn šĕmô šām in the Bible and the Ancient Near East (BZAW 318, 2002) and "The Place of the Name in Deuteronomy" (Vetus Testamentum 57, 2007) and The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament with InterVarsity Press (2008). She is a frequent presenter at the Society of Biblical Literature and the Institute of Biblical Research. One of her more current research interests is the relationship between environmentalism and biblical theology.
Dr. Richter regularly speaks and lectures in church, para-church, and university settings. In 2008, she was inducted in the Sigma Chi Pi Honor Society of the Assemblies of God Commission on Christian Higher Education. Some of her recognitions and awards include: the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the Valley Forge Christian College and Alumni Association (2007), Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Educators (2007); the Asbury Theological Seminary’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2006); the Graduate Society Dissertation Completion Fellowship, Harvard University (1999); and the Derek Bok Certificate of Distinction in Teaching, Harvard University (1996-1997). Dr. Richter is married to Dr. Steven Tsoukalas. They have two (perfect) daughters: Noël and Elise.
