Pre-Seminary Education
Graduate Education
Wesley is a graduate school offering degrees at the master's level. An undergraduate degree from an appropriate institution is required for admission into our master's degree programs.
Beneficial Experiences
A variety of pre-seminary experiences provide a solid foundation for graduate theological studies. These experiences are not requirements for seminary admission but are recognized to greatly facilitate the process of earning a seminary degree:
- pre-seminary studies including those disciplines that provide cultural and intellectual foundations essential for theological inquiry;
- studies in the humanities, social sciences, or other liberal arts disciplines;
- courses in any of the following areas as a part of undergraduate studies:
- Greek, Hebrew, other foreign languages,
- literature and composition,
- ancient and modern history,
- philosophy,
- psychology,
- speech and communication, and
- sociology;
- one year of introductory Greek/Hebrew prior to seminary:
- helpful but not necessary; basic Greek and Hebrew are offered at the Seminary,
- four of the degree concentrations require competency in New Testament Greek;
- sound knowledge of the content of the Bible will allow a student to advance more quickly in seminary studies.
Other Considerations
- Additional study beyond the normal requirements of the chosen degree may be required should applicants be judged to have serious deficiencies for theological studies in the seminary.
- A Bible or ministerial degree is not required for admission into any masters program. Many of our students have liberal arts degrees from both secular and Christian institutions.
