Day
The greatest divider of churches and denominations in the past three decades has been the seductive and demanding push to have “full inclusion” and “acceptance” of “gay” and “trans” identifying persons. This course will examine the biblical witness on homosexuality and transgenderism, in the context of sexuality generally, looking at “pro” and “con” arguments by some of the most important biblical scholars on all sides of the issue. Supplemental consideration will be given to the philosophical, scientific, political, and pastoral aspects of these issues.
Leading biblical scholar Dr. Robert Gagnon will join us for this special opportunity to learn about this issue from a scripturally faithful perspective that defends the church’s historic foundation of a male-female prerequisite for sexual ethics. Understanding this issue is not only important for its content, but also serves as a valuable case study in proper hermeneutics (interpretive methods) for reading Scripture faithfully.
The course is available both on campus and fully online. You can join live or watch the courses on your own time.
The course meets Thursdays, 6:00-9:00pm CST. It begins on August 15 and ends on December 5.
Robert Gagnon, Ph.D., is known the world over for being the foremost expert in the Bible’s view of homosexual practice, having risked his career to defend the historic scriptural view in a mainline denominational context while others kept silent. His book, The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Text and Hermeneutics, is considered the definitive work on the topic, along with his over 23 scholarly articles and presentations, and he continues to be a key voice in the contemporary debates on human sexuality. He is currently working to complete Speaking the Truth in Love, a book that will both update and popularize his research on homosexuality and transgenderism in the Bible. Dr. Gagnon is also working on a book about the most important passages in the Bible.
Dr. Gagnon has degrees from Dartmouth College (B.A.), Harvard Divinity School (M.T.S.), and Princeton Theological Seminary (Ph.D.). He has been a passionate teacher of Scripture for thirty years, first at Middlebury College, then for 23 years at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and for the past 5 years at Houston Christian University and Seminary.
