Wesley Biblical Seminary is offering a new class that explores ministry in the African-American Church. Proclamation and Discipleship in the African-American Church will be offered January 8-12 at Wesley Biblical Seminary’s main campus in Jackson, Miss. Bishops from several historically Black denominations have partnered with Wesley Biblical Seminary to help teach the class.
Proclamation and Discipleship in the African-American Church will explore the historical development and specific context of the African American Preaching experience, as well as the process and purpose of Discipleship in the African-American church. Pastors and church leaders from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds can participate in the class and gain historical context, practical tools, and ministry insight into serving in a predominantly African-American context.
“This class is part of our commitment to equipping people from all backgrounds to serve effectively,” said Dr. Chris Lohrstorfer, vice president of academic affairs at WBS. “Our student body is very diverse, and we want to offer courses that equip our students to serve where God has placed them.”
The class will feature two bishops from historically Black denominations as guest lecturers. Bishop Michael Frencher, presiding bishop of the Southwestern Delta Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and Bishop Joseph Campbell, presiding bishop of the South Central Dioceses of the Church of Christ Holiness USA, will both share from their experience leading pastors to be more effective in ministry.
“I am excited about the opportunity students will have to learn from Bishop Frencher and Bishop Campbell. Their decades of ministry experience will add depth and insight to this class,” Dr. Lohrstorfer said.
The course will take place January 8-12, beginning each day at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until the late afternoon. The course is 3 credit hours, and can be taken for credit towards a degree or as an audit.
